THE SPECTRUM GAMES DATABASE 3D MONSTER CHASE PUBLISHER Romik AUTHOR Unknown YEAR 1983 CATEGORY Arcade Adventure DESCRIPTION One of the first full colour 3D maze games to be available. Kind of like Doom circa 1983! Find your way out of the maze while avoiding or killing the nasties. CONTROL Predefined Keys (sorry, can't remember what...) Selection of Joysticks INSTRUCTIONS Find your way out of the 3D maze to safety! Each maze consists f a number of levels, interconnected by lifts (which require keys to access). Each level contains some beasties, which will kill you if you run into them. An overhead map provides you with a view of where in the maze you are and where the nasties are, but unfortunately doesn't show the maze itself or any of the goodies! You given, however, a number of grenades which you can use to dispatch any bad guys who get too close! SEQUEL/PREQUELS None. SCORES RECEIVED As far as I can tell, 3D Monster Chase was released before any of the major Sinclair mags were around (apart from maybe Sinclair User, but I don't recall that far back!). It was never re-released, so only the oldest of Speccy users will remember it. URL This snapshot is NOT widely available. GENERAL FACTS A pretty nifty (if slow) game for the time. The walls are solid and nicely coloured, and the beasties really do surprise you when they pop up from nowhere! The only real problem is the lack of a map - it wouldn't have been too hard to have a map build up as you went along, I'm sure! Then again, maybe it would've been too easy then! The game is actually very similar to the game which featured on BBC Television's "The Adventure Game" at some point (the one involving the DOGRAN, which you had to guide through a maze to get something and bring it back to you....), although I think that was running on a BEEB rather than a Speccy. Although I've never played it, numerous people have commented upon this game's similarity to 3D Monster Maze on the ZX-81. NOTES Not a bad little game, well worth a blast every now and then. Just be sure to let those grenades off before the beasties get too close!
